How to Build a Daily Reading Habit (Even With a Busy Life)

How to Build a Daily Reading Habit (Even With a Busy Life)

We all know that reading is good for us, but life in Sri Lanka can be very busy. Between working long hours, commuting through traffic, and taking care of family, finding time to sit down with a book feels almost impossible.

The secret isn’t “finding” time—it is creating time. You don’t need hours of free time to be a reader. Here are four simple ways to build a reading habit, even if you are the busiest person you know.

  1. The “15-Minute Morning”
Instead of reaching for your phone as soon as you wake up, reach for a book. Reading just 5 to 10 pages while you drink your morning tea or coffee starts your day with a calm mind. By the time the rest of the world wakes up, you’ve already made progress!
  2. Use Your Commute
If you travel by bus or train, that is “hidden” reading time. Keeping a small book in your bag makes it easy to read a few pages during your journey. If you drive yourself, try listening to audiobooks. It turns stressful traffic time into a productive learning session.
  3. Read Before Bed (The No-Phone Rule)
The light from your phone screen can make it harder to sleep. Try putting your phone away 20 minutes before bed and reading a physical book instead. It helps your brain relax and ensures you get at least a few pages in every single day.
  4. Don’t Finish Books You Don’t Like
Life is too short to read boring books! If you aren’t enjoying a book after the first 30 pages, put it down and start a new one. When you are excited about the story, you will naturally want to find time to read.

Start Small, Read Daily

Building a habit is about consistency, not speed. Whether you read one page or fifty, the goal is to do it every day.
